What Is Relative Major & Minor - Guitar Scales
By Kim Celinder
There are both major scales and minor scales. Major scales have a bright, happy sound, while minor scales have a dark sound. These sounds come from the different intervals between each of the notes in the scale. For example, a major scale goes like this: tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone, semitone. The natural minor scale goes like this: tone, semitone, tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone. There are only 12 notes in music, so some scales are bound to have some of the same notes in them. The tab below shows how the C major scale contains the same notes as the A natural minor scale. A minor is known as the 'relative minor' of C major, because it's a minor scale that's related to the major scale. Note: Remember it's the order of the notes that creates the distinctive sound of a scale. |
